Child Find

The District is committed to identifying, locating, and evaluating all private school children with disabilities, including those in religious schools, within its jurisdiction, as outlined in S300.125 and 300.220. The process for identifying and evaluating these children will be similar to the procedures used for children with disabilities in public schools.

To facilitate this, the District will:

  • Engage in consultation with representatives (such as staff and parents) of private school children aged three to twenty-two with disabilities. This consultation will focus on how to effectively implement intervention and referral activities.
  • Provide information to private school representatives—including administrators, teachers, parents, and students—about special education eligibility criteria, referral procedures, and relevant federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Share information with local pediatricians regarding special education services and referral processes.

Before a student is referred for special education services, the general education resources must be thoroughly reviewed and, if appropriate, utilized.

If it is determined, after reviewing general education resources, that a private school child may need special education services, the referral should be directed to the child’s public school of residence or, for preschool children, to the Jurupa Unified School District Department of Special Education.
