Social and Emotional Wellness

Social and emotional wellness (sometimes referred to as mental health) is an important part of our children’s healthy development.  Being mentally healthy allows an individual to feel good about himself or herself, to be able to make better choices in life, reduce stress levels, better cope with everyday stressors and it also allows one to focus on the important things in life such as family and friends.  When parents are mentally healthy, they are able to cope with the daily stresses of parenthood and provide a healthy environment in which their child can thrive.

Parent's Corner

  • Talk often with your child and listen carefully as your child communicates with you.
  • Hug them, hold them, and respond to their needs and interests.
  • Read aloud to your child every day. Play and sing with them often.
  • Treat your child with respect.
  • Set limits on their behavior and discipline them calmly, not harshly.
  • Ensure a safe, orderly, and predictable environment, wherever they are.
  • Spend quality time with your child doing things that bring joy to his/her life.
The words “mental health” have a negative response from some people because there is a belief that seeking mental health services is an indication of being insane.  Mental health professionals refer to this as a “stigma.”  Seeking counseling services does not mean someone is insane, it means the person is willing and ready to make a difference in his/her life.  Counseling involves prevention, intervention, and treatment wherein the clinician (also called a therapist) will assist the client in exploring ways to cope with situations that the client may be suffering from such as stress, marital issues, family issues, anger, sadness, depression, etc. So, next time you feel the need to speak to someone that can hear you without being judgmental and will ensure your confidentiality, do not hesitate to seek professional support.
