Del Sol Grade Level Reconfiguration FAQs
The Jurupa Unified Governing Board recently made the decision to change the grade level configuration of Del Sol Academy to TK-6 and include the Del Sol neighborhoods in the boundaries for Mira Loma Middle School beginning in the 2026-27 school year. The Board’s discussion and action on this specific topic took place during a series of public meetings, including March 11, September 9, and September 30, 2025. In accordance with what the Brown Act requires, the agenda for these meetings was publicly noticed 72 hours in advance of each meeting and the Board received public comment during the meetings, as well as by email, throughout the decision making process. Based on the feedback and questions received from the JUSD community, the District has prepared the following Frequently Asked Questions. This page will be updated as new questions and answers become available.
A: Like many school districts in California, JUSD is experiencing declining enrollment and has been working for several years to “right-size” the District. This change will reduce the unique costs necessary for operating a TK-8 school, amounting to at least $1.4 million saved annually.
Also, the Del Sol community has outgrown the school facility. The Del Sol campus has a capacity of 1,300. Current enrollment is 1,178, and the campus size cannot accommodate expected student population growth with approved residential development within the school’s boundary area.
In addition, 7th and 8th-grade students will have greater academic opportunities at a comprehensive middle school, while the elementary programs at Del Sol will be enhanced with a focus on the needs of that grade span.
A: Del Sol’s middle school population is not large enough to warrant a new school for that purpose. Currently, Del Sol has 257 middle school students. For comparison, Jurupa Middle School serves 1,041 students, Mira Loma Middle School serves 720 students, and Mission Middle School has an enrollment of 612.
A: Yes, children in the Del Sol community will still have priority to attend the school in grades TK through 6. Their neighborhood middle school will now be Mira Loma Middle, while the neighborhood high school will remain Jurupa Valley High.
A: No, the CFDs provide facilities funding for each of the schools in whose boundaries they reside. CFDs also guarantee priority attendance at the neighborhood school. For each of the Del Sol area CFDs, the funding will continue to be used for the schools in the CFD’s boundary areas.
A: The district has not made a decision as to whether or not to build a school for that community. Such a decision would come at a much later date when more of the community has been built, and more families have moved in.
A: Yes. When a significant number of students from that development enroll, the district will be able to assess current school boundaries and make appropriate changes to accommodate growth in the region.
A: Yes, transportation will be provided for all 7th and 8th-grade students for the regular school day in the Del Sol area. Two additional bus stops will be added to accommodate these students.
A: Del Sol’s current start and end times are 8:00 a.m. and 2:15 p.m., and Mira Loma’s current start and end times are 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. The buses that will be provided for all 7th and 8th-grade students in the Del Sol area will pick up at a similar time to the current drop-off times at Del Sol for the convenience of parents and families.
Additionally, the later start for JUSD middle schools, including Mira Loma, allows students to take additional classes in zero periods. Zero period at Mira Loma begins at 7:35 a.m. (Like all other schools, transportation is not provided for zero-period attendance.)
A: Yes, Think Together is also available at Mira Loma, with a focus on activities and academic support that are tailored to middle school students.
A: Mira Loma Middle School offers a comprehensive middle school program with robust academic programs, including honors and accelerated courses, an array of clubs and extracurricular activities, and more. As a Community School, Mira Loma also offers a wide variety of student supports, including a Wellness Center. In addition, Mira Loma offers the Dual Immersion program, allowing students to become biliterate in Spanish and English. This includes the opportunity to take Advanced Placement (AP) Spanish as an 8th grader. These programs are not currently available at Del Sol.
A: Not at all! Mira Loma has classes in science, technology, art, and math. Next year, Mira Loma will also have Project Lead The Way, a nationally-recognized STEM program that offers real-world connected learning experiences
Mira Loma also offers honors courses in most subject areas, including Math 1, in which eighth-grade students can earn high school credits. Mira Loma students can also participate in specialty programs like the award-winning Dell Student TechCrew, Video Production, and a wide selection of arts classes, including Band, Choir, Visual Art, and Introduction to Guitar. These courses are not currently offered in the Del Sol Academy middle school program.
A: As a dedicated middle school campus, Mira Loma offers a wide range of opportunities to help students explore their interests. AVID, ASB, WEB (Where Everybody Belongs), and the 5 Star Club provide leadership opportunities. Clubs like Yearbook, Gardening Club, Science Club, Anime Club, Film Club, and Drama Club offer students a chance to learn and have fun while engaging in creative pursuits. Intramural sports through the Think Together program allow students to participate in basketball, soccer, and volleyball. Mira Loma also participates in the Girls on the Run running club.
A: We understand that change is difficult for every student as they progress through grade levels and move from elementary to middle and high school. However, we have supports in place to help them have a positive experience. Programs such as WEB Leaders, behavioral health supports, and the MLMS Wellness Center are in place to ensure students have a successful and positive experience.
