More than 70 students from Nueva Vista High recently descended on the Costco Distribution Center in Mira Loma for a firsthand look at the largest Costco distribution center in the world.
The field trip was organized by Distribution and Logistics teacher Lucy Centeno. Nueva Vista is the only high school in Jurupa Unified School District – and one of just two in Riverside County – with a logistics program. "I want to thank Costo Depot Team 961 for hosting Nueva Vista High School," said Mrs. Centeno after the visit. "Students were able to see the variety of roles that help a teamaccomplish daily goals and objectives. They had tremendous opportunities to hear from and observe workers, from entry-level to management."
The students heard the history of the sales giant, learned about the background of the Costco management team, toured the refrigeration facility, and enjoyed a Costco-hosted lunch.
The logistics industry – chiefly, the distribution of consumer goods – is a primary driver of economic growth in Inland Southern California, given the region's supply of affordable land and its proximity to major ports in Los Angeles and Long Beach. Logistics remains a leading source of job growth in the Inland region, according to economists in Southern California.
"It's invaluable for our students to visit worksites and experience work-based learning. It helps them make connections between the classroom and the work place. I am very grateful to our industry partners who make this possible for our students," added Roberta Pace, Director of College and Career Readiness.
