Sun Safety Reminder for Families
Dear JUSD Families,
As we continue to enjoy sunny weather, we encourage families to make sun safety part of their daily routine, as harmful UV rays can penetrate clouds and reflect off surfaces such as asphalt, concrete, water, and playground equipment. Excessive UV exposure during childhood can increase the risk of future skin and eye damage, making it important for students to practice sun-safe habits by applying sunscreen, seeking shade, and limiting direct sun exposure during peak UV hours between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. whenever possible.
Before your child comes to school, please apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher) to exposed skin. Starting the day with sunscreen already applied provides important protection during outdoor activities, recess, physical education classes, and other school events.
We also encourage students to wear sun-protective clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses that provide 100% UVA/UVB protection when outdoors.
Jurupa Unified School District supports a sun-safe school environment. Students are permitted to wear sun-protective hats, sunglasses, and clothing while outdoors. In accordance with California law, students may also carry and self-apply sunscreen at school without a physician’s note. We ask that sunscreen containers be clearly labeled with the student’s name.
Thank you for partnering with us to promote healthy habits and protect students from unnecessary sun exposure.
