College and Career Readiness in Jurupa Unified
October is College and Career Kickoff Month in Jurupa Unified, and to help our families prepare for success after graduation, our high school students and counselors are sharing advice and information on college/career options and resources.
Applying to University of California and California State University campuses
In this episode, Warrior News students, Zoey Goforth and Victoria Felix, interview their counselors, Mr. James Marnell and Mr. Wellington Escudero, about the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) campuses. They discuss eligibility requirements, the CSU Direct Admission Program, deadlines, and advice for the application process.
Advice for students:
“Pace yourself. We want to make sure we’re doing things in small chunks. It would be really important that they’re using their California Colleges account to launch their application and import their grades directly from California Colleges onto your application.” - James Marnell, Patriot High School Guidance Counselor
“The college application process can definitely be challenging if you’re doing it alone. So, do yourself a favor, don’t do it alone. Come on into our college and career center (and) sign up for our college application workshops.” - Wellington Escudero, Patriot High School Guidance Counselor
Paying for College - Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and California Dream Act Application (CADAA)
Rubidoux High School students, Alanna Campos and David Steiger, speak to their counselor, Ms. Kimberly Sanchez, about paying for college. They go over dates, tips for applying, and the misconceptions about financial aid and scholarships.
Advice for students:
“Apply because you don’t know what you’re going to get. Things have changed with financial aid and other grants.” - Kimberly Sanchez, Rubidoux High School Academic Counselor
Dual Enrollment and Community Colleges
Community College offers a wide variety of programs and opportunities for students. Nueva Vista High School students, Dahlia Cruz and Victoria Zamora, learn more about community college and dual enrollment from their career center clerk, Ms. Eufemia Muralles. Ms. Muralles shares why community college is a good option for students, the costs of attending, and dual enrollment as high school students.
Advice for students:
“Don’t be afraid to reach out to teachers, your counselors, and career center staff. They’re here to help, and you can also explore options through
CaliforniaColleges.edu.” - Eufemia Muralles, Nueva Vista High School Career Center Clerk.
