RHS swims to victory

The RHS swim team made a splash this season, posting an undefeated record in league meets while diving into a new water polo program.

In all, the Rubidoux High School boys went 11-0 (8-0 in league) while the girls were 10-1 (8-0 in league).  Coach Bryan Kendall said it was the best season to date for the team, which has grown to 45 students.

"We have a lot of new swimmers," he said.  "It's exciting."

Also new this season: water polo squads at RHS, with many of the players cross-recruited from the swim team.  In fact, Mr. Kendall said, "A lot of the swim team's success stems from water polo, which took a beating this year and lost a lot of games.  That made the students want to prove themselves in the pool" by excelling at swim meets.

Swimmers' success also rippled from goal-setting, focus and racing against their own personal records, Mr. Kendall said.  It can be grueling to swim laps for hours at a time, so staying trained on goals is critical.  "They focused well, and kept working toward their goals.  Our motto this year was 'finish strong.'"

In addition to perseverance, the team's regimen taps punctuality, dedication and communication, said Mr. Kendall.  He also praised his squad's kindness, sportsmanship and willingness to help others.

The students pushed each other to succeed, Mr. Kendall added.  The coaches, meanwhile, pressed students to swim hard, think big – and make a splash.  "They get to create their own dreams and create their own life and decide what it is they want to accomplish," said Mr. Kendall.  "It's not just in the pool."

RHS will offer a water polo program this summer.  The squad will hold morning practices and evening scrimmages.  For more information or to sign up, please contact Mr. Kendall at (951) 743-9872 or bryan_kendall@jusd.k12.ca.us.
