Community Schools

​​​A community school is any school serving preschool through high school students through a “whole-child" approach, with an integrated focus on academics, health and social services, youth and community development, and community engagement. Jurupa Unified School District has 18 community schools; 13 elementaries, two middle schools, and three high schools.

Magic of Kindness:
​​Community partners and volunteers support Jurupa Unified School District year-long, but their generosity is especially felt during the holiday season. Non-profit organizations and community volunteers provided fun events such as Christmas in the Classroom, the Jurupa Children’s Christmas Party, Shoes for the Holidays, and the Holiday Food, Toy, and Clothing Drive to make the season more joyful and bright for JUSD students and families.

Beyond Excel:
Jurupa Technology Education for Parents (JTEP) classes offer instruction in computing skills. They are among various programs offered for parents and the community through the Parent Involvement and Community Outreach (P.I.C.O.) department.

Helping Hands: 
Wellness centers – an integral part of JUSD’s Community Schools program – provide resources to help students and families navigate a variety of obstacles so that they not only survive but thrive.

Top D.O.G.S.:

The Watch D.O.G.S. program in Jurupa Unified School District Community Schools, aims to bring fathers onto our elementary school campuses to encourage their involvement and to provide positive role models to all students.

Sense of Community:

One pillar of Community Schools is active family and community engagement. Community schools host numerous programs for parents and families such as The Family Fun Workshops that were organized with the nonprofit Visión y Compromiso at Troth Street Elementary in the 2023-2024 school year.

Growing Well:

Wellness Wednesdays are a safe space for Rubidoux High School students. The wellness center staff curates activities and a welcoming environment to encourage students to distract themselves from the outside world for a while.

The faces behind Community Schools:

Dr. Shayna Golbaf, A Pillar of the Community:

Dr. Shayna Golbaf is Jurupa Unified's new Community Schools Coordinator under the Parent Involvement and Community Outreach Department (P.I.C.O.). She is a vital bridge between parents, principals, teachers on special assignment (TSAs), and students. ​

Karmina Cook, A Caring Spirit:

Karmina Cook’s primary responsibility is to help develop the whole child at her school site. As a teacher on special assignment (TSA) for Community Schools, she provides resources for Ina Arbuckle Elementary families, students, and the community.
