Jurupa Unified has launched a Digital Gateway initiative, meaning the district will equip each student in grades 2-12 with a Chromebook to take to and from school. Each Chromebook will be monitored and filtered to protect students while online.
Digital Gateway will:
Digital Gateway is funded by short-term financing proceeds from Measure EE, the facilities bond that district voters approved in in November 2014. The bond costs related to the Chromebooks will be fully paid during the life of the devices. Students in grades 2-12 are scheduled to receive the devices at the start of the 2016-17 school year. According to Joshua Erickson, who teaches at Jurupa Valley High School: "My curriculum hasn't changed. My delivery has. The result is that more students are engaged. And that has made all the difference in my classroom." Elizabeth Wells, a teacher at Mira Loma Middle School, is also supportive: "Going 1:1 means more than avoiding the hassle of signing up for the computer lab and the inconvenience of dragging heavy lap top carts to and from the classroom. It means that all students will have access to learning with tools that will prepare them for their futures. It means they will develop skills that they will need to participate in a global society. It means we are providing equitable opportunities and are also committed to producing members of a skilled workforce."
