This summer, teacher representatives from Rustic Lane in Grades 3-6 attended the
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) summer institute training in support of our site taking the first steps towards becoming an AVID school.  AVID’s mission is “to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.”  For 2016-17, the teachers who attended training will partner with their grade level colleagues to begin implementing the AVID system in support of our students becoming college and career ready. Organization, Agendas, Notetaking, and School Culture are areas of focus for Rustic lane as we begin this journey. Your support in monitoring student organization and homework completion, checking and signing student agendas nightly, and conversing with your student about their daily learning experiences are vital to the success of AVID for our students and their futures. Students who do not get agendas signed nightly or complete classwork/homework assignments will be assigned to the Responsibility Room for recess to complete work and reflect on how they can be more responsible in preparation for their futures. With the implementation of AVID, there are also various organizational tools that students will be required to have daily for learning. Please see the list attached to this letter of supplies needed. An AVID kit with these requested supplies will be made available for a $10 donation during Back to School Night and the first days of school. Students will participate in a “Binder Boot Camp” the first full week of school to prepare and organize themselves for the year ahead. Apart from the kit, students in grades 3-6 will receive a School Agenda free of charge. Student Agendas have been revised to align with our implementation of AVID as well as our Positive Behavior program, so I encourage you to look through the agenda with your student to learn more after receiving it.
