Dear Rustic Lane Families and friends,
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2019-2020 school year at Rustic Lane Elementary. We are excited to share many opportunities for growth, exploration, and collaboration as students embark on the journey of the year ahead. We will embrace an innovative mindset and partner with staff, families, and the community to help our students succeed and build towards a strong and bright future. I know that through our hard work and support for one another, this year will be a successful endeavor.
I am energized and deeply committed to making a positive difference in the lives of our children. We will accomplish this by setting high academic expectations for all students and providing supportive systems to assure they are met. Teachers will continue to collaborate around building instruction of the Common Core Standards and communicate with you regarding student progress, so necessary intervention and enrichment can be offered. This year, interventions with small group instruction and supports "pushed in" to the classroom will assist with providing instruction focused on literacy and allow for guided reading to take center stage. In the area of Math, lessons will continue to be enhanced with increased problem solving, giving fidelity to Balanced Math practices, and the building of conceptual understanding through Math FUN. As a site, we will also dive deeper into Next Generation Science Standards, and extend learning with further opportunities for making and the innovation center! Healthy living initiatives remain at the forefront with the continuation of 100 mile club, Walk to School Wednesdays, and the addition of Spark PE. Spark will be developed as a tool for enhanced PE instruction as well as a resource of activities for our students to participate in during their recess breaks. While our site did not continue to qualify for grant funding for the Fresh Fruits and Vegetables program, we still encourage students to apply their learning from these past years and bring healthy snacks for recess time.
As Rustic Lane Leopards, we will also continue to build our Positive Behavior/Social Emotional Learning Program through R.O.A.R., which stands for Respect, Ownership, Attitude, & Responsibility. With knowledge and practice of social skills to help students meet these expectations, success can be achieved by all. Rustic Lane students in grades K-6 will continue to build their technology skills using Chromebooks daily as a way to enhance their learning, connect with their world, and meet 21st century expectations for success. Students in Grades 2-6 will take the devices home nightly to extend their learning opportunities beyond the school day. Reminding students to use these tools for academic supports, balance their time on and off of technology, and to demonstrate digital citizenship when using their tech tools. We will further enhance the rigor of instruction by continuing to take steps forward as an AVID Elementary. Our school culture and instructional practices will emphasize preparing students to be college and career ready; assisting students in the development of organizational & notetaking skills as well as other strategies; guiding them along the road towards a successful future.
Great success at any school does not happen without a team effort. We invite you to become an active participant in our school community through volunteering, joining our PTO, as well as attending and supporting school events. Throughout the year, you will be receiving announcements of upcoming meetings, parent-teacher conferences, assemblies, etc. I ask that you please be a part of the Rustic Lane school community and that you support our school by attending these important functions. As partners, we share the responsibility for our children's success and want you to know that we will do our very best to carry out our responsibilities. We ask that you guide and support your child's learning by ensuring that he/she:
1) Attends school daily and arrives on time, ready for the day's learning experience
2) Completes all homework assignments given by teachers and gets his/her agenda signed nightly
3) Reads daily to develop a love for reading and to improve literacy skills
4) Practices basic math facts and looks for examples of how math is a part of their world
5) Shares school experiences with you so that you are aware of his/her school life
6) Informs you if he/she needs additional support in any area or subject
7) Knows that you expect him/her to succeed in school and to give his/her very best
8) Understands the importance of maintaining good character and integrity at all times
We will make communication a top priority and invite you to partner with us as we absolutely can grow stronger together. Please sign up with your student's teacher to particpate in class dojo and look for Rustic Lane with #RLELeopards to stay up to date. I look forward to working with our remarkable staff, involved parents, and committed students in the year ahead. The wonderful Rustic Lane staff and I feel privileged to be a part of this school family. We thank you for your support and look forward to meeting you.
