The PICO Promise

“PICO serves the community by identifying the needs of students and families.” - Jose Campos, Director of Parent Involvement and Community Outreach

"I wanted to share some good news with you. My mom had her Citizenship Interview last Monday and passed. In 2 weeks she does the Oath. I just wanted to say thank you for all you do for our community and for helping make a difference in my mama's life! God bless you for all of your help!" - PICO TestimonialParent Involvement and Community Outreach (PICO) is a department within JUSD dedicated to strengthening the individual, family, and community. PICO’s mission is to encourage parents to become advocates for their child’s education; provide resources and services to foster growth and school readiness; and use community organization to build a healthier, connected community. This mission is put into practice with the aid of numerous programs, many of which are offered in partnership with local agencies and members of the community.

"I always let our teen moms know about the programs you offer and let them know it is a huge help! I thought my son was maybe having delayed speech, but once he began interacting more he started speaking more. Yay! Now at the age of 3 he knows all of his letters out of order, letter sounds A to P, shapes, counts from 1 to 20 in English and 1 to 10 in Spanish!" - PICO Testimonial
PICO boasts several programs to support early childhood learning. In Pre-K STEM, children learn numbers, shapes, colors, patterns, measurement, weather, ecology, problem solving, and creative critical thinking skills. Another program, ABC Music & Me, helps children ages two months to five years develop pre-literacy and language skills through music and story time. In these programs, parental involvement is the key to learning.

School Based Health Services make up another portion of PICO’s efforts to serve the community. Project HeART eliminates barriers to learning such as vision, dental, and general access to health by providing a community care specialist to support JUSD students. On a larger scale, the Troth Street Family Clinic provides entire families with high quality medical care through PICO’s partnership with Borrego Health.

"I want to thank you for the services you provide to the community. My mom took her citizenship test today and passed! We are forever grateful. Because of your program, my mom felt confident to go through with the application." - PICO TestimonialOther notable services provided by PICO include Group Counseling at school sites and The CARE Closet, which provides clothing to children and adults in need.

Elliott Duchon, Superintendent, says it best: “Jurupa Unified is committed to serving the needs of the whole child and the needs of the whole community. Nothing exemplifies this more than JUSD’s own PICO program.”

The September 2020 Edition of The Horizon newsletter features four stories about PICO programs that have served the Jurupa Valley community. For a comprehensive list of PICO services, visit JUSD’s Parent Involvement and Community Outreach website at: https://jurupausd.org/our-district/edserv/pico.
