Superintendent's Welcome

Welcome back to school, Jurupa Valley and Eastvale.  I want to thank you for being a part of the Jurupa Unified School District.

The start of school is a time of progress and renewal for the entire community.  I hope you share my excitement for the new school year, whether or not you have school-age children.  What happens in our halls of learning affects all of us: Everyone has a stake in strong schools, an educated workforce, and a well-informed community.  In addition, JUSD offers a wide array of adult education programs leading to job placement immediately after completion.  We also offer programs for new mothers and infants.

Jurupa Unified provides scores of opportunities for students, families and the community.  You can read about many of them here, in The Horizon.  Our official e-newsletter, which serves the Jurupa community, is designed for anyone interested in what is happening in JUSD.  Additionally, you can follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and of course, our district website, jurupausd.org.

This summer, construction has progressed with the modernization of Glen Avon and West Riverside elementary schools; at both campuses, total makeovers are underway.  Meanwhile, the field turf at Rubidoux High has been replaced and is ready for some great football.  Thanks to all of our staff who spent the summer preparing for the school year.

Teaser:  Jurupa Middle and Troth Street Elementary are next for modernization, thanks to the Measure EE bonds approved by Jurupa Valley voters.  I can't wait to share with you how the schools will look.

Already, Measure EE renovations and projects are completed or underway at many Jurupa schools, including Jurupa Valley and Rubidoux high schools and Ina Arbuckle, Mission Bell, Peralta, Troth Street and West Riverside elementary schools to name a few.  The bond also has delivered upgraded technology and security at every campus in our district.

JUSD has entered phase two of Digital Gateway, providing a computer to every Jurupa student for modern, equitable, continuous learning.  As anticipated, many of the 19,000 devices initially assigned to students have neared the end of their useful lives; therefore, the computers - already paid off to prevent long-term debt for short-term investments - will be phased out and replaced with fresh devices.

Meanwhile, have you seen the Innovation Center at Jurupa Valley High School?  It replicates the environment of a modern workplace and helps students learn skills in engineering, design, construction, fabrication and computing.  At the same time, some students in the district's growing stringed instrument program will enter high school this year - which means a full orchestra is on the way!

In reflecting upon these and other far-reaching improvements, I would like to thank Jurupa Valley residents for supporting Measure EE - all of our employees for ensuring so many opportunities for students, not only this summer but over the steady course of many years.

Finally, the new school year provides a good time to highlight our five pillars of support at JUSD:

  • Nurturing early learners through programs that create a solid cognitive foundation and stimulate a love of learning.
  • Encouraging students to challenge themselves at every grade level, setting them on a path toward continuous achievement.
  • Promoting college and career readiness through rigorous, college preparatory curriculum, as well as hands-on, real world learning opportunities.
  • Engaging the Jurupa Unified community of stakeholders in our students' success.
  • Preparing our students for a future here or anywhere.

The comedian Carol Burnett summed it up:  "You have to go through the falling down in order to learn to walk.  It helps to know you can survive it."

At JUSD, we nurture students so they are prepared to learn, encourage them to challenge themselves, involved the community in their success, and prepare them to tackle the future that is theirs.  When they fall down, we encourage them to work their way back up.  We don't make learning easy but we do make it relevant and geared toward success in careers and college.  We enlist the support of the whole community and, together, we prepare for the future- to make sure falling down is about getting up, persevering, and learning without limits.
