College Expands at JUSD

More courses, more pathways, more options.

welding.jpgNever have Jurupa students had more ways to explore college while still in high school. From welding to history to computer systems, opportunities for Dual Enrollment continue to multiply. Students can sample a range of college courses; receive high school and college credit simultaneously; and earn up to a year of college credit at no charge.

It works like this: Students concurrently enroll at JUSD and a designated postsecondary institution. The goal is to get a jump on college, learn career skills, or dip a toe into college-level work to test the temperature. Benefits include cost savings, an accelerated degree or certification, and early momentum for college and career success.

“When they can complete a year of college while still in high school, that’s like a 25 percent off scholarship,” said JUSD’s Director of College and Career Readiness, Roberta Pace.

IMG_3335 (1).jpgNew this fall are transfer and career pathways, along with online English classes. The pathways support prerequisites for transfers to UC/CSU or college-level Career Technical Education. The English courses meet research writing and composition requirements. In all, Dual Enrollment serves 227 students this semester alone, up from 110 in all of 2017-18. Students now have access to college-level work through every JUSD comprehensive high school – a milestone to celebrate this College and Career Kickoff Month.

Today, Jurupa students enjoy a range of Dual Enrollment opportunities, including:
  • Guidance counseling, music and theater, and U.S. history as part of the new Pathway to Transfer, through Riverside City College.  Rubidoux High students can take the courses in a series over three years, starting in 10th grade, with the pathway expanding to Patriot this spring.
  • Manufacturing and computer information systems as part of the new Pathway to Career, through Norco College.  Juniors and seniors at Jurupa Valley High take the courses after the regular school day.
  •  College English courses through California Baptist University, based on research writing and composition.  The online courses are exclusive to JUSD.
  • Rubidoux Early College High School (RECHS), at Riverside City College’s Rubidoux Annex.  RHS students apply as incoming freshmen and take college courses during their junior and senior years.
  •  Welding at Riverside City College, an after-school program open to any JUSD junior or senior.  Jurupa students who complete one year in this pathway need just one additional course to earn a welding certificate.
This year, the new transfer and career pathways derive from the state’s College and Career Access Pathway (CCAP) template and reflect a recognition by legislators that college-level curriculum can benefit a broad cross-section of high school students in addition to traditional high achievers. For students who will be the first in their families to attend college, or who wonder if college is the right fit, Dual Enrollment can be transformative.

“One of the biggest advantages is that it’s a confidence-builder,” Ms. Pace said. “Students say, ‘Not only am I in theory ready to do college work, but I’m actually doing it and am succeeding at it.  So I can keep doing it.’”

Expanding college opportunities reflects Jurupa’s broader emphasis on preparing each student for college and careers – and supporting every student in learning without limits for a lifetime.

“Research shows that students participating in dual college enrollment are significantly more likely to go on to college, more likely to go on directly after high school, and more likely to finish their college programs and degrees,” Ms. Pace said. “From a welding student who says, ‘Wow, I love this class’ to the student getting started on their degree program, there’s something for everybody.”
